The purpose of The American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program - "A Constitutional Speech Contest" - is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States on the part of high schools. Other objectives of the contest include the development of leadership qualities, the ability to think and speak clearly and intelligently, and the preparation for the acceptance of the duties and responsibilities, the rights and privileges of American citizenship.

2009 ORATORICAL CONTEST WINNERS

The 2009 Oratorical Scholarship Contest was held on March 15, 2009 at the University of Great Falls in Great Falls, Montana. The winners of the contest are:

2009 NATIONAL ORATORICAL CONTEST RESULTS

Kristina Lee, a Junior from Forsyth, reached the quarter finals of the 2009 National Oratorical Contest. Kristina was the winnder to the 2009 Department contest, and was sponsored by Forsyth Post #39. Kristina received a $1,500 scholarship for making the semi-finals, and a $1,500 scholarship for reaching the quarter finals.

Andrew Dykstal, a high school senior from Lafayette, Ind., capped a busy weekend of competition in Indianapolis by earning an $18,000 college scholarship and first place in The American Legion National High School Oratorical Scholarship Program – "A Constitutional Speech Contest." His winning oration was titled "A More Perfect Union." In his speech, "A More Perfect Union," Dykstal spoke of how the Constitution only works with an active, vigilant citizenry. "Unless the people are actively involved in pursuing the welfare of the nation, our government is like a bicycle without a competent rider; unstable and inclined to wander."

2009 NATIONAL ORATORICAL CONTEST

For the first time, the national finals of The American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program competition will be broadcast live on the Internet, Sunday morning, April 19, beginning at 10 a.m.

The three high school orators – who successfully emerge from quarter-final and semi-final competition with 50 other champions from each state and several overseas departments – will vie for top honors before judges in Indianapolis to determine which of them receives the $18,000, $16,000 and $14,000 scholarships.
